WELCOME TO WORSHIP!
Meditation Thought for Worship: Following Jesus doesn’t require being perfect or the best; it just requires being willing to do whatever you can to show God’s love. The first step of spiritual discernment is focusing on God’s presence with you and love for you. Then you ground your heart in gratitude. So what are we grateful for, in our community together as a church? We listen for key words that stand out, and we think about previous conversations we’ve had. What things were positive, and what were disappointing? We listen to our hearts tonight as we listen for the Holy Spirit.

To really determine where God is calling you next requires lots of prayer, mindfulness, imagination, and openness. We also must be willing to let go of what we hold onto, if God calls us elsewhere. Some attachments we have are nurturing, some hold us back, and some can go either way, depending on our relationship with them. So does your weekly routine give you a helpful rhythm, or does your routine control you?
Scripture verses read: Hebrews 12:1; Luke 9:62; John 8:36; Galatians 5:13.

WELCOME TO WORSHIP!
Meditation Thought for Worship: We can always benefit from being helped to see God more clearly. As we recognize God’s forgiveness of and calling for us, we get baptized to proclaim and celebrate it. Baptism also helps others see the what God is doing in people’s lives. It is a first step for us in a life-long mission of both seeing and showing God more clearly.

On Sunday, December 10, the Personnel Committee presented to the church Chuck Taft as their recommendation for our minister of music. There was a meet-and-greet fellowship time that morning with Chuck and his wife, Renee, then the church voted in a called business meeting during worship to officially call Chuck to the position. We are very excited about him becoming a part of our church family. Chuck is already known by many in our congregation, having grown up around Weaverville and graduated from North Buncombe High School. He has directed his Reuter Center Singers choir when they have performed in our sanctuary many times, he directed the Messiah performance here last December, and he is an adjunct instructor at UNCA and Mars Hill. (Read his bio here.) We welcome Chuck’s passion for ministry, talents in music leadership, and heart for the Lord as he blesses our church in the future!
In this Bible study series, we’re thinking about how to figure out what God wants us to do. Not how to pray for God to do the things we want, but to spend time in prayer discerning where God is calling us—as individuals and as a church. Spiritual discernment has been practiced since the very beginning of Christianity. It’s usually not easy—as individuals or as a group—but it is necessary in order to grow and continue following God.

WELCOME TO WORSHIP!
Meditation Thought for Worship: It’s so common for people to follow their own plans instead of God’s, but then still be unhappy. Remember that when God calls us to do something, it will always be better for us, not just helpful for others. We make excuses because God’s callings infringe on what we want to do, even though simply doing what we want rarely leaves us happy. But following God’s call is what will lead to true abundance.

WELCOME TO WORSHIP!
Meditation Thought for Worship: All of the Christmas story was surprising. And the fact that the Wise Men were included would have been an almost unbelievable surprise. Would God really invite pagan
mystics from another country to recognize Jesus? Yes! And because God opened up the invitation to seek Jesus so wide, we can be sure that it includes us, even if we don’t always understand where we’re headed.

Tonight we hear from both Palestinians and Israelis about what it's like to live in the Palestinian Territories, which Israel controls. There is a lot that is undefined for the residents of those places (the West Bank and the Gaza Strip), which raises anxiety. And the many separation barriers lead to lives being separated too.

WELCOME TO WORSHIP!
Meditation Thought for Worship: God doesn’t call perfect people to help build the kingdom. In the Bible it was always the people who had been overlooked, rejected, marginalized, and excluded. Those were the surprising people that God used and Jesus invited. Because God doesn’t call perfect people to help build the kingdom of heaven; God calls us.

This week we talk specifically about the city of Jerusalem. It's considered holy by Christians, Jews, and Muslims. So there are many holy sites in the city, but that makes it a contentious situation, as everyone wants to control it. We learn about who controlled what parts of the city throughout history, and yearn for the possibility of peace. Wouldn't it be wonderful if Christians led the way in making Jerusalem a city of peace.

Meditation Thought for Worship: With constant news coverage and social media, we’re flooded with bad tidings. But Jesus is always working to change things, so his arrival brings good tidings. In fact, his kingdom is so wonderful that it’s almost hard for us to believe it will ever come. But with God, there is always hope. Even from what seems hopeless, God can always grow blessings.

In this session we continue the timeline of what events happened in the Holy Land, from 1948 onward—what changed, and how it affected the local population. We also watch an interview with a local Palestinian who is a Christian peacemaker, as we think about how we can join in the work to "seek peace and pursue it" (Psalm 34:14).
Now through Dec. 14, we will be collecting items for the Give Together Food Drive sponsored by the North Buncombe High School Student Council. Once collected, the food will be distributed to the Flat Creek Food Pantry, ABCCM, and MANNA Food Bank along with school counselors to give to student families as needed. Place donations in the wrapped gift box located in the Fellowship Hall beside our normal ABCCM-North food donation basket.
Requested Items:
• Non-perishable canned food; vegetables/fruits, soups, beans
• Instant Oatmeal, pasta, rice, jelly, and ramen noodles
• Cornbread mix, granola bars, etc.

WELCOME TO WORSHIP!
Meditation Thought for Worship: It’s easy to think, “I would be happy if I just had a few more things.” But actually, our happiness doesn’t increase when we get more stuff. Instead, our happiness increases when we’re more generous. Being generous also sparks thanksgiving in others, which can then spark generosity in them. That’s the kind of blessing cycle we need to be a part of.

We are collecting items to donate small gift bags to the residents of Mars Hill Manor Retirement Center and our church's homebound. The Youth Advisory Panel of WMU NC (Woman's Missionary Union) will put the bags together, and our Pauline Snelson Women's Mission Group will deliver them. Items will be collected through Wednesday, Dec. 6, and we hope to make 100-125 bags. Please help us spread holiday cheer by donating chapstick, small tissues, travel size hand lotion, and/or individually packaged cookies or crackers into the labeled box by the elevator outside the Fellowship Hall.
