Nic was born and raised in Newfield, NY (just outside Ithaca). He has a BA in English with minors in Appalachian Studies and History from Mars Hill University, and has spent time studying politics, religion, and Japanese culture at other universities.

Nic was raised Baptist and has served in Baptist, Methodist, and Episcopal/Anglican churches, both in the US and Japan.
